Anyone can come to the Artful Dodger and feel at home. The inclusive environment attracts many different crowds to the 25-year-old restaurant.

While the Artful Dodger has undergone many changes since it first opened, the restaurant’s colorful murals attract large crowds from all over Downtown Harrisonburg.

Anna Ragland, soon to be daytime manager of the Dodger, said the art and music scene of the restaurant and the food and drinks they serve stand apart.

The Artful Dodger showcases local artists on the first Friday of every month. Ordinarily, just one artist is shown, but this July is an exception. There are three artists showing and selling their art at the Dodger this month.

Irene Hamilton and Alic Sloat get a coffee at the Artful Dodger after she returned from London, UK. They enjoy eating there and eat ther almost everyday.

In addition to art, the Dodger may not have as many shows anymore, the restaurant is still known for its music in which people line down the block to attend. It still hosts weekly jazz nights and local DJs on weekends.

“The music draws a crowd because of the soothing and welcoming environment,” Ragland explained.

In the past, the Dodger has been known for casual food and brunch, but they are currently changing their menu. “We are becoming more of a sandwich shop, but we still have breakfast all day and brunch on the weekends,” Ragland said.

According to Ragland, the most popular item on their menu is the breakfast quesadilla. “The breakfast quesadilla is the biggest hit,” Ragland said, “It’s really big and delicious. It has everything in it you could want for breakfast, including tatertots.”

Customers Patty and Chris Fay came to the Dodger for their first time and ordered the garden scramble and the french toast. They said they were very impressed and would most definitely come back.

They thought the atmosphere was very friendly and inviting, especially with the artwork. Chris was particularly impressed with the skateboard themed sculptures. “I like the artwork,” Chris said, “It’s really cool how they’re made out of skateboards.”

The Artful Dodger said they are “the living room of downtown.” For two and a half decades, they have been serving Harrisonburg with food, local art, and different genres of music, as they will for many more years to come.
